My Witness
I
surrendered my life to Christ quite early in my life. Although I cannot recall
the exact date on which I was saved, I have a vivid memory of this life-changing
event. It was a church family camp and as always, the children would spend our
time with John and Ros, a godly couple who have devoted their lives to
children’s ministry. Over the three days of the camp, they would do various
activities with us- one of which was telling us countless stories that taught
principles in the scripture. A particular story that they told was called the
“Story of the three crosses and the lost boat” and it went like this:
There once was a boy called
Mark who really wanted to make a boat of his own. He saved up his pocket money
and built a model boat and then
took it to the beach to sail it. Then he was distracted by a car accident and while he was gone, two teenagers came and stole his boat. When Mark
came back and his boat was not there— He looked everywhere along the beach but
still could not find it. Later on, he found his boat in a shop and the shop
owner said that Mark would have to buy it if he wanted it back. When Mark
finally earned enough money and bought his boat, he held it tight saying,
"little boat, you are twice mine, firstly I made you and now I've bought
you!”
The story was figuratively
describing Jesus’ love for us—God made us but because of sin we are “lost” or
separated from God. Jesus became flesh and paid the “full price” for our sin
through his substitutionary death on the cross—breaking down this sin barrier. Being
an avid toy enthusiast back then, this short, simple story touched my heart. I
had this realization of just how much God loved and wanted us to be with Him. Hence,
John and Ros asked if anyone wanted to commit and surrender his/her life to
Christ— I raised my hand and a child of Christ I am.
Comparing my life before and
after that moment, the biggest difference was probably my attitude towards
everything that was Christian. Growing up in a Christian family, going to
church, praying, reading the bible and the like have always been something that
was expected to be done—it was a routine. However, I feel that ever since that
day I finally knew, truly, who I was singing praises to, reading and hearing
stories about, praying to every night. Christ had become something that was
personal- an eternal relationship between God and myself- not just a “family
thing”.
